Banana Surf - Guchi is an icon of Tamarindo and has a great selection of boards, accessories and clothing at his two locations. If you want to know where the waves are hitting, need some advice on a board or want to get some great gear at a great price, then see him. Actually, I buy all my boards from Banana :) They also have great rentals available...not the usual crap you get in some stores.
Witch's Rock Surf Camp is a great place to stay and learn to surf. Their location is beachfront with one of the world's absolute best learn-to-surf waves directly in front of them. They have awesome sushi and great happy hour drink specials. Definately one of my favorite places to hang. As for lessons, Carlos, Johan, Ricardo and Flash are awesome.
If you want to meet some real local surfers, then check out Tamarindo Surf School. Elmer, Menrique, Diego and the gang provide some excellent instruction, and it seems that these guys are in the water non stop...even surfing after providing lessons all day.
